The Marine Radio Operator's Short Range Certificate (SRC) has replaced the previous VHF Operator's course and is designed with the new generation of Class D GMDSS equipment for yachts and motor cruisers in mind.  While there is no requirement to replace existing radios, yachtsmen should be prepared with the new certificate in advance of replacing or upgrading their existing VHF equipment.

The course is therefore offered in two parts - a full day for new students who do not already hold the Marine VHF Operator's Certificate, and a half-day conversion course for those who do.

Note: These course durations are based on the latest RYA recommendations - earlier guidance recommended teaching durations of 2 days and 1 day respectively.

Private study of marine radio procedures prior to the course will be of assistance, especially to students with no prior experience.  Numerous publications are available from chandlers and through the RYA members' publications catalogue.
